The paper presents an algorithm for indicative the activities of engineering students in the process of studying the course “Strength of materials” in the formation of skills of constructing diagrams of internal forces for deformation bending of structural elements.

The authors describe an attempt to develop criteria for rated current progress of engineering students in process of studying course "Strength of materials" on the example of studying the method of constructing diagrams of internal forces in tension and bending of elements of constructions.

In order to optimize the development process of the individual tasks, which will be protected from solutions copying, the instructors of the chair dynamics, strength of machines and resistance of materials in R. E. Alekseyev’s Nizhny Novgorod State Technical University have been developed universal tasks for computational and graphic works for the main courses of the chair.

In conditions of the time reduction of training the technical profile students, there is a need to improve the educational process in order to preserve the foundations of basic fundamental training in technical and special subjects. The teachers of the department “Dynamics and strength of machines and resistance of materials” in Nizhny Novgorod State Technical University developed the method of laboratory studies on the courses “Structural mechanics of ship”, “Structural mechanics of machines”, “Structural mechanics of airplane”, including the elements of the distance learning during the students independent training to the implementation of the laboratory studies.

For the achievement of one of the main objectives of the educational process: the development of productive thinking of students, future specialists in the field of construction and repair of technical facilities, the teachers of the Department "Dynamics and strength of machines and resistance of materials" the technique of carrying out practical studies on course "Resistance of materials", based on the strengthening of the role of orientation activities of the students
