The article examines the problems of small business development in border regions, as well as assesses the role of economic security for small businesses. In addition, an analysis of the quantitative change of small enterprises in the border areas of Russia during the period of anti-Russian sanctions was carried out, the reasons for these changes were considered.

The article is devoted to the analysis of the main characteristics of the Smolensk region as a border area of the Russian Federation in modern conditions. An approach to scientific education in the sustainable socio-economic development of border areas is considered. It is noted that the optimal use of the advantages of border areas contributes to solving the problems of intensifying Russia's international activities and its national security.
