The digital era has introduced us to online (distance) education – an alternative to traditional on-campus education – which has already proved to be effective in achieving high academic results. However, there are challenges that have not been solved yet. One of these challenges is concerned with academic dishonesty that encompasses such issues as cheating, plagiarism, inappropriate citation, fraud, etc. This article focuses on the fundamental facets of academic dishonesty in the online modality and the solutions that can assist educators in battling against online cheating.

The article substantiates the relevance of issues related to the development of artificial intelligence, which made it possible to form a clear understanding of its modern tools. The prerequisites for the emergence and features of artificial intelligence as an international product are summarized. The analysis of modern trends in the field of its technologies is carried out. The list of popular artificial intelligence technologies is presented and the current state of application of its technologies by applicants for higher education is clarified. The article presents the results of a survey of applicants for higher education at the Faculty of Teacher Education of Kazan Federal University. The features of the use of artificial intelligence technologies by applicants for higher education are determined. The advantages and negative consequences of its use in the education system are considered.
