This article addresses the issue of municipal solid waste (MSW) management as a critical environmental challenge of our time. The increasing volume and complexity of MSW pose significant threats to environmental quality and public health (Smith, 2020). It examines the main types of MSW, their impact on the environment and human health. Existing MSW disposal methods such as landfilling, incineration, composting, and recycling are analyzed. Landfilling, while a common practice, can lead to soil and water contamination (Jones, 2018), while incineration raises concerns about air pollution (Brown, 2019). Particular attention is paid to the prospects for developing MSW recycling technologies aimed at reducing the negative environmental impact and extracting secondary resources. As highlighted by researchers, recycling offers a pathway to resource recovery and a reduction in landfill waste (Lee & Park, 2021). The analysis reveals that a comprehensive approach to MSW management, including sorting, recycling, and the use of innovative technologies, is the most effective way to address this problem. Such an integrated approach is crucial for achieving sustainable waste management practices (Garcia et al., 2022). The article is intended for environmental professionals, researchers, and a wide range of readers interested in environmental issues and sustainable development.
