With constant scrolling and swiping on social media platforms, our average attention span has been slowly declining over the last two decades. The detrimental impact of consuming a large amount of content online has reached an EFL classroom as well. When given a listening task, language learners easily get distracted. They also experience difficulties listening to their peers and summarising the information they have just heard. As a result, language instructors have to adjust to this new change and adapt their lesson plans in order to help learners increase their attention span and become successful active listeners. This article describes a variety of activities that encourage active listening in an EFL classroom and gives a short overview of additional benefits that can be derived from these activities.
