The majority of gas pipeline defects are caused by mechanical damage and metal corrosion which are located in hard-to-reach places.
Opening of underground gas main pipelines and inspection is not economically advan-tageous as it covers only the surface part of the object. Therefore, diagnostic specialists have been working for the last ten years to solve the problem of assessing the condition of gas pipelines without pitting.
Nowadays non-contact diagnostics methods of gas main pipelines are used, and tech-nical diagnostics is developing abroad and in CIS countries.
Magnetic inspection methods can detect surface and subsurface defects in welded joints such as cracks, unreworked metal, slag inclusions, and gas pores to a depth of up to 10 mm. Magnetic inspection methods are based on detection and analysis of scattered magnetic fields that occur at the locations of defects. [1].
