Academic portfolios are not a novelty in education as they have been implemented in the curriculums of creative fields of study for many years. With educators looking for new means of encouraging students to reflect on their own academic work, portfolios have recently come in handy in the curriculums of a variety of “non-creative” fields of study. This article describes existing forms of portfolios and highlights the advantages and disadvantages of implementing portfolios into the academic environment. Besides, it aims to find a decent approach to avoid the disadvantages and to provide educators with a plan that can guide them on their first steps towards the implementation of portfolios in their course curriculums.
