Stylistic differentiation is a common language phenomenon, it pertains to all structures of language. To the greatest extent vocabulary and phraseology are exposed to differentiation. The basis of stylistic differentiation is synonymу of language, its expressiveness and stylistic polyfunctionality. The results of stylistic differentiation of poetic language are fixed in dictionaries of various types.
The article analyses the way a poetic translator deals with imagery, with a view to outline the possible methods of its transfer into the target language, taking into account the restrictions imposed by poetic rhyme and rhythm. It is sought to elicit non-essential elements of a literary image, which can be sacrificed, should the translator face the impossibility to transmit the integral image, the key elements being preserved and reproduced in the target language.
The paper examines linguistic and stylistic features of Shakespeare’s language in “Romeo and Juliet”, the most famous love story of all time. To better illustrate the beauty and innovative character of Shakespeare’s language, one scene from the play is chosen for close reading: Act 1, Scene 5. The practi-cal value of the material lies in step-by-step analysis of the lines that the characters utter, thus revealing the beauty, the nature of imagery, and the true meaning of the characters’ words and behavior.
Metaphor is an integral part of the poetic genre, performing both rhetorical and poetic functions. Patriotic metaphors in classical Chinese poetry reveal various aspects of the thinking and emotions of poets and lyricists. This article examines the formation and use of some of these patriotic metaphors.
Based on the material of the Anglo-Saxon heroic epic Beowulf, the images of the ancient peoples inhabiting the North of Europe in ancient times, their attitude to the natural elements are studied. The semantic inconsistency of the metaphor is revealed. To be more exact, the replacing one descriptive meaning with another one, the transition of the subject meaning to the category of feature (semantic shift), the sign of an auxiliary subject, located in the environment of feature words, are investigated.
