The article focuses on the problems of teaching 1st year students of linguistics to work with cultural and language realia at an oral practice or home reading class. The author considers the possibilities of developing students’ reading skills by introducing a series of tasks and assignments aimed at finding, analyzing and commenting linguistic and cultural data they come across in a text or a work of fiction. Such an approach to organizing a class not only ensures broadening of students’ outlook and cultural knowledge acquisition, but also gives them a better insight into the author’s message when studying works of fiction teaching them to consider every situation within a framework of the historical and cultural context. Tasks provided by the teacher serve as a general guideline for students to follow when searching and analyzing the information both in the the given context and outside it.
The article focuses on the problems of developing communicative competence when teaching students of marketing. The research is based on practical experience of using textbook “Market Leader. Intermediate” when working with second years students. The author gives her idea of possible ways of adapting tasks from the textbook to ensure language and communicative skill formation. The article shows that a high level of communicative competence can be achieved only if there are preliminary exercises and tasks than train language skills and introduce the necessary professional terminology in the English language. Such an approach guarantees that the skills are developed and students get a better insight into their future specialty. All that serves the purpose of interdisciplinary integration and makes the process of university education more productive.
In the article, various aspects of creating and applying educational presentations designed for teaching English at a non-linguistic university are dealt with. The author dwells on the general and special didactic principles underlying the presentations for educational purposes, describes the four stages of their development from a script to a computer implementation, gives practical recommendations regarding their usage in the educational process. The conclusion is drawn that educational presentations are an effective means of optimizing the English language studies.
