THE TRANSLATION OF CULTURALLY SPECIFIC ARTIONYMS // Научно-методический электронный журнал «Концепт». – 2026. – . – URL: http://e-koncept.ru/2026/0.htm
An artionym is a linguistic term for various titles, although most often it is used to describe the titles of the paintings. Some of these titles pose a significant problem for translators due to their close connection to the country’s culture, historical events or historic figures that can be relatively unknown outside their homeland. It can be hard not only to translate, but also to understand for outsiders, who don’t have a specific cultural background. The translators, who work with artionyms, should, therefore, not only have a wide range of knowledge of various cultures and subjects, but also know how to present this information to the audience – both knowledgeable and unfamiliar with the subject. This article describes cultural peculiarities of artionyms and problems with their translation. It uses 15 paintings as an example of how translators solve this problem using translation techniques and try to keep their cultural elements intact.
