This paper presents a comprehensive study justifying the replacement of obsolete and physically deteriorated oil circuit breakers (OCBs) of the VMP-10 series with modern vacuum circuit breakers (VCBs) of the BB/TEL-10 series at the Yakutskaya State District Power Plant (GRES). The research methodology included an analysis of the technical condition of the existing switchgear, short-circuit current calculations, verification of equipment for thermal and electrodynamic stability, reliability analysis, and an assessment of economic efficiency.

The electric power industry is critical to the economy, yet it faces significant challenges: much of the infrastructure, particularly electrical grids and major substations, is significantly deteriorated or overloaded. This is particularly true for electrical substations, where highly loaded equipment has reached the end of its service life, increasing the risk of failures and process accidents. This article examines the need for equipment modernization at the 220 kV Tommot substation. The objective of this project is to replace the existing outdated and overloaded 16 MVA T-3 and T-4 power transformers with more powerful ones. The study presents a comprehensive analysis of the substation's current condition, including its geographic location, technical characteristics, and load parameters, based on control measurements. It also examines the theoretical foundations of transformer operation, their classification, and key characteristics to justify the selection of new equipment. Short-circuit current calculations were performed to verify compliance.
