Abstract. A new concept of teaching and research laboratory for the study of classical convection problems for the students of specialisation “physical hydrodynamics” and related specialties has been proposed. The novelty of the approach lies in the complex laboratory work, which includes both the physical experiment, data collection and signal processing using modern techniques and simultaneous in-real-time implementation of numerical modeling and data analysis. Use of information-communication technologies and multimedia allows students to more effectively absorb such basic concepts of fluid mechanics, as the stability of me-chanical equilibrium, the excitation of secondary modes of fluid motion and the gradual transition to chaotic behavior. As an example, the laboratory session for the study of convection in a gorizontal layer heated from below is presented
