Abstract. The paper examines the role of didactic games during the literacy learning of pupils with mental retardation. The author reflects the views of local teachers and psychologists on the use of didactic games in the educational process. The paper defines the basic conditions of organization and holding of didactic games, gives examples of specific didactic games used in teaching literacy.
