This article examines the requirements for candidates for the position of a conscientious judge, as enshrined in domestic legislative acts of the last quarter of the 18th – first half of the 19th centuries. It is concluded that the requirements for candidates for judicial positions gradually became more complex by the middle of the 19th century.
