The article gives a brief description of the development of educational and methodological materials to improve the level of independent work of cadets in a foreign language. The importance of teaching reading for effective work with foreign literature in order to obtain the necessary information on their specialty is shown. Examples of exercises are given both aimed at preparing for reading and designed to control the understanding of reading. Results of testing are presented.
