The article deals with the ways of using illustrative material during foreign language lessons for the developing of communicative competence. Examples of the illustrative material at different stages of learning a foreign language, depending on the psychological characteristics of age, are given. The considered tasks are included in student’s books recommended for work in foreign language lessons at school, or corresponding to the level of language proficiency at each stage in accordance with the federal state educational standard.
