The author focuses on the concept of student engagement in the university foreign language lesson. The author`s approach is based on the interpretation of the concept of ‘activity’ described in psychology and education theory. The student active engagement in learning is regarded as a major prerequisite of effective foreign language acquisition. The author identifies several ways to enhance student engagement, both outward and inward, in the context of the university foreign language classroom.
