The article shows in general terms the history of the establishment of the Department of Foreign Languages at the Karelian State Pedagogical Institute, names the reasons that led to the organization of the Department of Foreign Languages at the Karelian State Pedagogical Institute. The research presents the fruitful activities of the founder and the first dean of Foreign Languages Department Mayme Sevander and highlights the role of the rector of the Karelian State Pedagogical Institute Petr Ihalinen in its establishment. The authors provide some information about the departments that made up the Department of Foreign Languages, characterize briefly the teachers who, with their work and their personal qualities, created the basis, spirit and atmosphere of the new department.

The article considers the factors influencing the professional choice of applicants. The authors discussed the problem of aging of teaching staff in the whole country, in the region and in particular in Tobolsk. Using ROSSTAT statistics and HSE analysis, we tried to show the influence of the factors of choosing a profession on the development of the personnel problem depending on the regions. The authors noted the need to take this dependence into account when building career guidance work. They proposed the possibility of using the resources of the Museum of Public Education of the Tyumen region in conducting career guidance work by the university.

The article is devoted to the problem of preserving a historically important building using a layout. The authors also consider the contribution of I.P. Zhegusov in the creation of the first higher educational institution of Yakutia.
