In the paper the author considers how historical science studies the event of 1136 – the moment when Prince Vsevolod Mstislavich was in exile from Novgorod. Stages of the Novgorod historiography's development are emphasized and characterised. The author explores approaches of researchers to the problem of republican system's genesis and role of people movements of the first third of the XII century in its process.
