The article considers realia of Russian culture in N. V. Gogol’s poem «Dead souls» and ways of their translation into English. This composition is an interesting example for research intoculturally conditioned vocabulary as it contains a large number of realia of Russian culture. Themostfrequenttypesofrealiahave been revealed, statistics of frequency of various ways of translation has been given. A conclusion can be drawn that although the chosen ways of translation make narration more understandable for a reader, in some cases they contribute to the loss of the national flavour.
