the article examines the travels of the Russian nobleman Alexei Dmitrievich Saltykov to India (1841–1843, 1845–1846), as reflected in his letters to his relatives. The article focuses on the genre specificity of Saltykov's writings, which are related to epistolary texts, diary entries, travelogues, literary works, and official documentary sources of information on the history of colonial India in the mid-19th century. The article analyzes the narrative structure of the letters, which is influenced by the author's self-narration and involvement in the national dualism of the Western and Asian worlds. The article also addresses specific issues related to the lexical representation of authentic phenomena (realia) in the Russian translation of the letters from French.
