In the conditions of the current state of the problem of human mental adaptation, the authors tried to differentiate the psychological processes and mechanisms aimed at adapting the personality to the requirements of the environment into active – conscious and passive – reactive defense mechanisms that are not realized by the subject. Without denying the significance of the constitutionally and socially determined individual psychological factors of the “choice” of an adaptive strategy, we can assume that in some cases, along with them, the qualitative and quantitative requirements of the environment and activity can significantly affect the mechanisms of adaptation and mediate certain patterns of personality development.
