The article deals with the peculiarities of the formation of grammatical means of expressing modality in complex sentences of the Latin language, the subordinate parts of which have the meaning of an indirect question. It is possible to establish that in the Latin language initially there was practically no formally expressed differentiation of independent and indirect questions on the interrogative word. That is why in Latin, with the beginning of the development of hypotaxis, it became the norm to use the subjunctive mood of the verb-predicate in the subordinate construction to indicate its dependent position in relation to the main part. In vernacular Latin, some pronouns and pronominal adverbs of the classical language were changed. The Latin translation of the Gospels mostly follows the classical model.
