Conducting research into the vastness of outer space, including detailed study of planets, stars and galaxies, helps students develop a deeper and broader understanding of the structure and patterns of development of the Universe. Astronomy provides educators with extensive opportunities to illustrate and explain fundamental principles and theories of the natural sciences, such as gravity, electromagnetism and thermodynamics. The study of astronomy encourages students to analyze complex empirical data and form sound scientific conclusions, and comparing astronomical knowledge accumulated by ancient civilizations and various interpretations of celestial phenomena contributes to their cultural and intellectual development. The article considers the process of integration of digital technologies in the study of astronomy. The possibilities of using information and communication technologies, their advantages and disadvantages are analyzed. Particular attention is paid to promising areas of development of astronomical education through virtual laboratories, electronic resources and distance learning technologies. The problems and limitations of the introduction of digital technologies are discussed.
