The article is devoted to the problem of professional development of teachers in the system of continuing education, taking into account the priorities and leading directions of state policy in the field of education. The author reveals the key concepts of "professional development", "professional growth of a teacher", "professional competence", and analyzes the professional formation and growth of a person. According to the author, only through professional orientation, professional competence and emotional flexibility of the teacher is possible to realize not only the creative potential of the individual in professional work, but also the development of her profession. It is concluded that not only the internal environment of an individual is important for the professional development of a teacher, but also the need for self-realization.
