The article examines the problem of interpreting phraseological units when working in a multicultural environment. It is indicated that the difficulty in working with these linguistic units is due to the specificity of their semantics. This article deals with the rich etymological structure of the English language. It analyzes the history of long-term contacts with other ethnic groups, which resulted in more than half of the English vocabulary being borrowed. The author identifies three main ways of word origin: the transfer of a metaphorical meaning from another language; association with a specific person, historical event, or place; and the reduction or fusion of words.
