The paper deals with the main issues of family business development. The author considers the experience of European countries in this sphere. The stages of family development provide support to increase the level of education, to develop entrepreneurial skills and to keep up family traditions.

The article examines the socio-economic nature of family entrepreneurship. Theoretical and methodological approaches to its definition are formalized through models reflecting the systemic, resource-oriented approaches and the approach based on the theory of «agents». The category of «family entrepreneurship» is interpreted.
