The research assesses regional heterogeneity and examines the process of economic equalization of Russian regions. The aim of the scientific research is to study the heterogeneity and assess the dynamics of inter-regional differentiation of Russian regions according to the main social and economic indicators of territorial development. The study is based on the analysis, ranking and typology of the subjects of the Russian Federation on certain indicators of socio-economic development. Within the framework of the conducted study there is an increase in the differences in regional development, as well as in the pace of economic development of Russian regions. The methodological basis of the work is the construction of models and assessment of the impact of social and economic factors on the development of the economy of the regions in the observed period from 2000 – 2018. Data ranking and cross-factor analysis of comparable data series was carried out on the main social and economic indicators of Russian regions. The results of the study allowed us to assess the level of regional heterogeneity and to form groups of regions according to the level of their regional development and taking into account their specific territorial characteristics. The calculations determined the presence of inter-regional differentiation and showed the possibilities of different groups of Russian regions for independent economic development.
