The article considers the problem of the psychological and pedagogical aspect of developing motivation for cognitive activity in foreign language teaching. As long as motivation is a complex system consisting of many components, while the student accumulates the experience of mastering a foreign language, all other components of the motivational system are transformed as well.

The article considers motivation as a component of students' independent research activities. The methodology for determining the leading motives of research activity is described in detail. The results of a survey of students of a technical university using this technique are presented.

The article is devoted to identifying the causes and level of motivation for classes in sports sections among schoolchildren. To diagnose the level of motivation of students, the following methods were used: Y. M. Orlova "Questionnaire of motivation for attending sports classes", N. G. Luskanova "Assessment of the level of sports motivation of schoolchildren". After the ascertaining stage of the study, recommendations were developed for teachers-coaches, which will increase motivation to attend sports sections.
