this article presents an analysis of obsolete words in the works of the Russian writer, doctor of Historical Sciences V. Yu. Sofronov. The classification of this lexical category by etymological, semantic, and other characteristics is included. The article deals with a number of issues concerning, first, descriptions of connotative obsolete words by etymological dictionaries of modern Russian language, secondly, the functions performed obsolete vocabulary; third, the study of regional literature from a linguistic point of view.
