At the beginning of XX century Azerbaijani intellectuals with democratic thinking op-posed traditional, i.e. obsolete religious education. They struggled for purification of religious upbringing and its integration into a new system. Such struggle first started in the middle of the XIX century. The author of the article has tried to summarize their ideas and reveal the key essence of such struggle and has referred to the opinions of the progressive and notable Azerbaijani intelligentsia who played a crucial role in the progressive, public and pedagogical life of that period. Among such intelligentsia, the most notable ones were A.Aghaoghlu, A.Huseynzada, M.A.Rasulzada, N.Narimanov, J.Mammadguluzada, O.F.Nemanzada and others.
The article presents an overview of scientific works devoted to the pedagogical ideas of K.D. Ushinsky and published in the journal "Soviet Peda-gogy" in the 1940s. The authors of the analyzed scientific articles are famous educational scientists (N.K. Goncharov, N.A. Konstantinov, E.N. Medynsky, V.Yu. Struminsky, etc.) and psychological scientists (B.G. Ananyev). The rele-vance of the ideas of K.D. Ushinsky for Soviet education is analyzed.
