The author examines the state of the brewing industry in Russia in the late 1880s – the beginning of 1890s years, paying attention to the number and productivity of the plants, geographical distribution of compa-nies, impact of the number of rural and urban administrative units on the brewing industry in Russia.

The paper deals with the description of county-level towns in the Ryazan province, made on the basis of the economic notes of the end of the 1790s, compiling ideas about urban life in its various forms: trade, appearance of “factories” and their subsequent activities, crafts, routine activities of residents.

The article discusses the main types of educational institutions of secondary vocational education in the Volga region, analyzes and compares the process of training specialists in these institutions. The author also touches upon the problems of the development of the existing network of educational institutions.
