This article discusses a unique phenomenon of the heritage of Russian culture – oral folklore, Russian folk tales, which have a truly immense world of mythological characters, animals and phenomena. It touches on the origin of fairy tales, their analysis, morality and connection with Slavic mythology.
The article deals with the problem of developing the ability of viewing reading of the 5th grade pupils of a general secondary school in literature lessons. The paper describes a system of tasks developed on the basis of Russian folk tales. The proposed tasks make it possible to check the level of formation of students' viewing reading skills and allow them to develop the ability to quickly and intelligently view texts to get acquainted with their content and identify the information necessary to answer the teacher questions.

The speech training of middle school students is associated with their mastery of the ability to create various types of monologue statements, which include retelling.
The article describes the system of tasks that were used in the course of work in the 5th grade on the topic «Russian folk tales» in order to improve the ability of schoolchildren to create selective retellings.
