The article focuses on issues related to the problems of purpose and implementation of criminal punishment in the form of the death penalty in modern Russia.

The paper examines the history of death penalty in Russia, the problematic issues of its application and cancellation in the modern Russian conditions. The author analyzes the statistical data on crime in the country, the results of sociological surveys, concluding that the death penalty is premature in Russia at the moment.
