This article provides a historical and legal analysis of the regulation of the funeral industry in Russia from the 17th to the 20th centuries. It explores the evolution from the church monopoly in the Russian Empire to the secularization and nationalization of the funeral industry during the Soviet period. The article highlights key legislative acts and political decisions that influenced the organization of burials, the establishment of cemeteries, attitudes towards cremation, and the development of new rituals. Special attention is paid to the contradictions between official policies and real practices, as well as the influence of wars and social upheavals on the perception of death and funeral rituals.
