The article discusses the design and manufacturing technologies of composite railway sleepers based on patent analysis. The main areas of development and technological solutions are identified. The advantages of composite materials and the prospects for their application are noted.
A comparative analysis of materials used for the production of polymer composite sleepers has been performed. Two main systems have been considered: thermoplastic and thermosetting polymer composites. Their fundamental differences, advantages, typical formulations, and practical applications have been highlighted. Special attention has been given to composite sleepers based on recycled polymers, which allow for the efficient recycling of plastic waste and industrial by-products. Strategies for optimizing the properties of such materials, including fiberglass reinforcement and the addition of functional fillers, have been presented. The paper provides an assessment of two types of composite sleepers based on thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers and offers recommendations for their selection for different operating conditions. Key development trends and areas that deserve further research are identified.
