The purpose of the article is to demonstrate the main means of expressing the phenomenon of contrast (based on the novel by Gregory David Roberts «Shantaram»). The novel «Shantaram» is rich with means of expressing contrast, which is due to the contradictory nature of the author. Theoretical description of the phenomenon of contrast, its types, and also examples from the text of the novel are provided in the article.

The article examines the role of gradation in the system of comparative-contrastive relations in language; the relationship between the concepts of "comparison" and "contrast" is analyzed. The main problematic issues of the category of comparative-contrastive relations of language in the context of teaching Russian as a foreign language are studied.
