The article is devoted to the problem of distinguishing the concepts of revolution and opposition in the coordinates of national history. Identifying the contradiction between «progress supporters» and «orthodox persons», the author reinterprets the Marxist-Leninist views on the revolutionary movement in Russia and on the relationship between power and society.

The article explores the novel by A. Kuprin «Duel» from the point of view of realization of the most important concept for the writer «own-other». The concept is actualized at all levels of the ideological and poetic system of the work, including in various systems of heroes. The poetics of female images becomes a special form of artistic representation of the concept «own-other» in the novel.

The purpose of the article is to demonstrate the main means of expressing the phenomenon of contrast (based on the novel by Gregory David Roberts «Shantaram»). The novel «Shantaram» is rich with means of expressing contrast, which is due to the contradictory nature of the author. Theoretical description of the phenomenon of contrast, its types, and also examples from the text of the novel are provided in the article.
