The article discusses the results of an empirical study to identify the aptitudes, interests and talents of junior schoolchildren. The results of diagnostics of creative thinking and imagination of children are shown. The study confirmed the identified contradiction between individual capabilities and the demand for their development and the collective nature of learning, which constrains this process.

It offers the organization of exhibitions and excursions on decorative and applied arts, as well as the development of a program for art lessons in the section "Decorative and Applied Arts" in elementary schools, aimed at developing the creative imagination of third graders. The article concludes that decorative and applied art is an effective tool for developing the creative imagination of third grade students.
