The article briefly outlines the current state of affairs in the sphere of the Russian Federation's activities in the development of the Arctic zone of Russia (AZR) using the Northern Sea Route (NSR). At the conceptual level, the author proves the inclusion of the Republic of Karelia in the AZR and the territories adjacent to the NSR. This justification is complex and includes financial and economic, social, infrastructural, environmental, administrative and managerial, political and historical aspects. The main conclusion is that, from the point of view of the author, it was possible to prove the relevance and possibility of including Karelia in the zone of the development of the AZR and the development of the NSR.
This article provides information about the Northern Sea Route, which can now become a worthy replacement for the Suez Canal, as well as a source of income for the Russian Federation. The reasons why a replacement for the Suez Canal may be needed and what the NSR can offer as an alternative sea route are considered in this regard. The first passage of sea vessels along the NSR and future opportunities for the development of this route were also considered.
