This article explores feminist motifs in the works of W.S. Maugham, with a particular focus on the novel "The Painted Veil" and short stories "The Round Dozen" and "The Force of Circumstance." Maugham demonstrates how his characters can reveal their inner strength and desire for self-realization, as well as challenge traditional notions of women's roles. Much attention is also paid to the portrayal of women from other ethnic groups, in case they turn out to be victims of colonial oppression. Furthermore, Maugham raises questions of the fate of unmarried women and their dependence on men and social norms. Maugham's literary work serves as a critique of the patriarchal attitudes of the early 20th century, exploring issues of inequality and the limitations of women's rights – topics that remain relevant today. The article offers a fresh perspective on female representations and their social roles in literature, opening new avenues for analysis.
