The paper considers the problems of educating younger generation at universities, formulates the main goals and objectives of educational process. The author considers how to reach goals in the process of higher education and describes conditions necessary for their realization.

The article is devoted to the organization of psychological assistance to first-year students living separately from their parents. Psychological help is determined by the difficulties that arise in students of this category. The article presents the results of a study of difficulties that are typical for students who previously lived in rural areas. The results of the study of typical difficulties that arise in nonresident students during the adaptation period are presented: difficulties associated with physiological and psychological discomfort, subjective and social relationships, difficulties in the academic field, as well as difficulties in organizing work. Based on the results obtained, comprehensive psychological assistance was offered aimed at overcoming the identified difficulties and developing the personality of students living separately from their parents.
