based on the linguistic analysis of internal speech, verb constructions and vocabulary of the protagonist of Eduard Verkin's novel "The Dead Man" by Nikita Slashchev, the article examines the contradictory image of a teenager. Aggressive verbal desires ("kill a Ghoul") The character combines them with a consistent rejection of real violent actions, which is fixed through modality constructions. The hero's self-assessment judgments, his reflection on forced friendship and family pressure are analyzed in dynamics: from Denis' perception as a "Ghoul" to his recognition as a "Human Being".
