The article decodes the poetic-philosophical sense of the expression «poetry-stolen air» which is the main concept of the novel «Green marquee» by L. Ulitskaya, and analyses mutually connected intertext units «Russian metaphysics», «power of the Russian word», that determine the motive and leitmotif structure of the literary work.

The scientific article summarizes the results of the study of intertextual techniques used to recreate historical realities in L. E. Ulitskaya. The novel "Jacob's ladder" uses a single – through – principle of artistic historicism – symbolic and intertextual. Introducing biblical and literary allusions, reminiscences, images, plots, associations, dramatizations, and giving them new interpretations, the author not only establishes the relationship between the past and present of Russian history and compares various historical epochs, but also gives his vision of their meaning, outlines the possible development of society in the future.
