The article tackles the problem of the necessity of study of nonverbal components in close connection with the usual verbal means of communication. The survey of scientific schools studying nonverbal means of communication and terminology used to indicate the phenomenon in question is given. The structure and contents of the seminar “Nonverbal Means of Communication”, its aim and tasks are outlined; also the approximate range of problems for course papers that reflect the most topical issues of the research in the given area is demonstrated
The paper discusses the stylistic devices of the English language for the representation of a smile as a means of non-verbal communication in fiction. In the works of English authors, when describing a smile, such stylistic methods as hyperbole, chiasm, paradox, antithesis, repetition, epithet, metaphor, comparison, and convergence were revealed. The analysis of the given examples proves that the description of a smile in literary texts contributes to the understanding of the mood, character, attitude, and even the type of activity of the character. Its description by means of stylistic devices conveys a wide range of characters' emotions and the effect they produce on others.
The article considers the ways of interpreting smile as a component of nonverbal communication in cross-cultural interaction. The author explores the attitude to smile in the Western world, in Russian culture and in the countries of Eastern culture and gives analysis of the survey aimed at examining the attitude of Russian students to interpreting smile and its meaning as a cross-cultural phenomenon.
The relevance of the research topic is due to the fact that it is aimed at studying non-verbal means of communication that teachers use when working with students. The results indicate that teachers most often use the "pointing gesture".
The purpose of the article is to consider the semantics and functioning of emojis in tweets (quick messages) of Japanese users of the social network Twitter. When analyzing the material, the method of sentiment analysis, observation and systematization was used. Using these methods, emojis were divided into three groups by semantics and five groups by functioning.
