The article reveals the cultural, historical and pedagogical reasons for the emergence of a new form of teacher training in female gymnasiums in the period under study – an additional peda-gogical class; the structure, content, forms, methods of training are analyzed. The importance of pedagogical classes for the social status of girls, the assertion of a position independent of men in society is shown. The possibility of using the valuable experience of these classes in the activities of modern specialized pedagogical classes is shown.

the article presents the results of a survey of teachers and heads of departments of higher educational institutions conducting training in the field of 29.03.04 "Technology of artistic processing of materials", conducted in order to assess the relevance of developing methodological support for practical classes in the discipline "Fundamentals of industrial skills" for students of the profile "Industrial design. The most effective types and priority formats of methodological support for conducting practical classes, as well as directions for its improvement, have been identified. It has been established that the greatest deficit in the methodological provision of practical classes is observed in the fields of artistic glass and ceramics processing.
