The article discusses such an important aspect of convicts’ resocialization as their moral resocialization in prison; it examines the necessary conditions for this: formation in convicts the ability to take responsibility for their lives, instilling in them the conscience and feeling of guilt in order to remove the barrier of the offender moral self-examination. The authors define the prerequisites for development of a sense of guilt and the mechanisms through which society can influence an offender – feelings of shame and remorse as determinants of moral conscience.
The article examines the theme of crime and punishment in the stories of William Somerset Maugham as the most important moral and philosophical motif of his work. An analysis of the works shows that Maugham interprets crime not so much as a legal offense, but as an internal moral decline, and punishment as a result of mental conflict, remorse and loss of life balance. Through the images of the characters experiencing the consequences of lies, betrayal, selfishness and moral weakness, the author emphasizes the psychological depth of Maugham's prose.
