The article examines the content of the textbook on the discipline «Foreign language», which implements the main educational purpose of training – the formation of the communicative competence of foreign military personnel when they master the language of their specialty.

The article discusses the issue of teaching the language of the specialty of foreign military personnel in a Russian military university. The main aspects of the work on the formation of language competencies that ensure professional training are analyzed. The experience of working with scientific texts in Russian language teaching classes is summarized.
