The article focuses on the problems of teaching 1st year students of linguistics to analyze fiction. The author considers the possibilities of developing students’ reading skills and skills of analyzing a short story by introducing a series of tasks and assignments aimed at finding, processing and interpreting the information in a work of fiction. The author provides examples of tasks that serve the purpose of developing students’ communicative skills, teaching them to do research on the problem in question and present the results of their research in class. Tasks that presuppose in-depth analysis of the cultural and historical background of a story are essential as they give students a better understanding of the historical and cultural context of the events described in a work of fiction and of the author’s philosophical conception. Such tasks are significant for pre-translation analysis.
The article examines theoretical aspects of the problem of forming socio-cultural competence while teaching junior schoolchildren foreign languages, analyzes various definitions of socio-cultural competence and its components, and describes the advantages and principles of using authentic materials in teaching intercultural communication. Particular attention is paid to the discussion of the expediency of introducing authentic video materials through W. Disney cartoons, thanks to which students will develop socio-cultural competence. The author highlights the psychophysiological features of children’s development at an early school age, and also describes the requirements for choosing a cartoon and the conditions for organizing the lesson based on it, offers electronic educational resources.
The article considers the possibilities of using mental maps in the process of teaching English in the system of additional education. The author shows how mental maps can contribute to the organization and structuring of educational material, support the development of creativity in students and increase their level of involvement.
The paper analyzes the difficulties faced by Chinese students in learning English. The main problems and features of teaching Chinese students English are considered from the point of cultural and social views. The differences in the writing system, grammar and phonology are also considered, the survey revealed the opinions of Chinese students from interviewed groups.
