The article is devoted to revealing the level of contemporary English borrowings knowledge by Russian speakers and describing the peculiarities of their attitude to anglicisms and the usage of these words. The authors conducted questioning of 207 Lipetsk residents that made it possible to reveal the most popular anglicisms and to find out the peculiarities of different groups attitude towards them.

The article deals with the actual issue of the active introduction of Anglicisms into the system of the modern Russian language. This process is now gaining incredible proportions, which provokes serious fears among Russian linguists. According to some of them, such a pace of any language change due to the influence of a foreign language may threaten its distinctive development and, ultimately, cause significant damage to the national culture as a whole. The paper discusses modern approaches to the definition of “Anglicism”, the classification of English borrowings and some ways of adapting foreign words, analyzes the causes and consequences of the active introduction of Anglicisms into the Russian language at the present stage, makes an evaluation of the influence of borrowing British lexemes on the development of Russian.

Much of what is permissible in oral speech will seem out of place in writing. Social life is gaining momentum every day, enriching Internet slang with new units, including those borrowed from the English language.

The definition of "slang" is given; the characteristic features of youth slang in Internet communication are presented. The Usage of slang in various spheres of life of modern youth is analyzed.
